What you'll see ⛰️ Summit🌄 Big views🦌 Wildlife🎒 Backpacking

Beyond the entrance area the park is deliberately trail-less. Backpackers pick one of 87 numbered units, take a free quota permit in person, watch the required safety film, borrow a bear-resistant food container, and then navigate by map and terrain. River bars and animal trails are the usual travel routes.

Tips
Permits are issued in person no more than one day ahead - you cannot book from home. Unbridged glacial river crossings are the biggest hazard, not the bears. Take more time than the map distance suggests: a mile an hour through brush is normal.
