Rockefeller financed and laid out these roads between 1913 and 1940 to keep motor cars out of the interior of the island. They are graded, gravel-surfaced and cross seventeen hand-built stone bridges, and no vehicles are allowed on them.

Tips
Open to walkers, cyclists, horses and, in winter, skiers. Signposts at every junction are numbered - carry the carriage road map. The bridges at Hadlock Falls, Jordan Stream and Duck Brook are the finest.
