The switchbacks climb through forest to a traverse below the ice-hung face of Johannesburg Mountain, where avalanches come off the hanging glaciers all afternoon. The pass itself is an open meadow saddle at 5,400 feet with peaks in every direction.

Tips
The Cascade River Road is 23 miles of gravel and often washed out - check the status before you drive it. Marmots at the pass will chew anything salty, including boot straps. Sahale Arm above adds 2,000 feet and is the finest ridge walk in the range.
