The Steep and Narrow section of the High Peaks Trail was blasted and carved by the CCC in the 1930s: a staircase cut into the rock face with iron handrails, threading between spires. California condors are regularly overhead.

Tips
The Steep and Narrow section is not for anyone uneasy with heights or exposure. No shade and no water on the High Peaks - carry three litres. Condors are most active mid-morning around the peaks.
