Named for the white quartz outcrop at its centre, Shining Rock Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in North Carolina - 13,400 acres in Haywood County within Pisgah National Forest, part of the National Wilderness Preservation System since it was created in 1964. Old fires and logging left high open balds with long views, unusual for the southern Appalachians. Trails are unsigned by design.
