Proclaimed in April 2012 on the inland half of the former Fort Ord army post, this 14,658-acre monument preserves some of the last undeveloped land on the Monterey Peninsula: maritime chaparral, oak woodland and rare wildflowers, with 86 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers and horses. Part of the acreage is still being transferred from the Army as munitions cleanup finishes.
