About This Event

The Department of Mathematical Sciences invites you to attend the Colloquium through the Visiting Professor's Program by Dr. Yingda Cheng.

Title: Structure-Preserving numerical method for Lindblad master equation

Abstract: In this talk, we consider numerical discretization for Lindblad master equation, which is a fundamental model for open quantum system. We design high order methods that are completely positive and trace preserving (CPTP). This is achieved by Lawson integrator or Nested Picard integrator. To deal with curse of dimensionality, we introduce tensor train compression schemes for computing systems with many qubits. This is joint research with D. Appelo, J. Hu and P. deMalstro.

Biography: Dr. Cheng is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech, and affiliated faculty with the Computational Modeling and Data Analytics program at Virginia Tech. Her areas of research are scientific computing, applied mathematics, and data-driven modeling & computation. Her interests focus on using modern data-driven, reduced order modeling and classical numerical analysis as tools to simulate highly complex and high dimensional multi-scale phenomena arising from science and engineering. Dr. Cheng received her B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2003 and her PhD degree in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. She held a postdoc position at the University of Texas at Austin. She was also a faculty member at Michigan State University.
