DESCRIPTION:Come make a splash in Huskies Group Swim Lessons! American Red 
 Cross Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-5 are being offered at the SDC Pool. Level 1 
 - Introduction to Water Skills Ages: 6 years and up Description: The purpo
 se of this level is to orient participants to the aquatic environment and 
 help them gain basic aquatic skills while developing positive attitudes an
 d safe practices around water. Learning Objectives: ? Techniques for enter
 ing and exiting the water ? Blow bubbles through mouth and nose ? Bobbing 
 ? Retrieve submerged objects ? Front and back glides and floats ? Body con
 trol and manipulation in the water ? Tread water using arm and hand action
 s ? Alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on front and back ? L
 earn water safety skills No previous swimming lesson skills or history nee
 ded to participate in this level. Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills Age
 s: 6 years and up Description: Participants work towards success in fundam
 ental skills\, including how to float without support and recover to a ver
 tical position. Learning Objectives: ? Techniques for entering and exiting
  the water ? Fully submerge and hold breath ? Bobbing ? Retrieve submerged
  objects ? Front\, jellyfish and tuck floats ? Front and back glides and f
 loats ? Body control and manipulation in the water ? Tread water using arm
  and leg actions ? Combined arm and leg actions on front and back ? Finnin
 g arm action ? Learn water safety skills Participants are ready for this l
 evel if they have completed the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 1 O
 R can successfully complete all certification requirements from Level 1 in
 cluding: ? Enter the water independently using the ramp\, steps or side. ?
  Have the ability to travel at least 5 yards\, bob 5 times and safely exit
  the water. ? Be able to glide on their front for at least 2 body lengths\
 , roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position (w
 ith assistance). Level 3 - Stroke Development Ages: 6 years and up Descrip
 tion: Participants build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 and achie
 ve basic water competency in a pool environment. Learning Objectives: ? Te
 chniques for entering and exiting the water ? Headfirst entries from the s
 ide in sitting and kneeling positions ? Bobbing while moving toward safety
  ? Rotary breathing ? Survival float and back float ? Change from vertical
  to horizontal position on front and back ? Tread water ? Flutter\, scisso
 r\, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front ? Front crawl and elementary b
 ackstroke ? Learn water safety skills Participants are ready for this leve
 l if they have completed the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 2 OR c
 an successfully complete all certification requirements from Level 2 inclu
 ding: ? Step from the side into chest-deep water\, push off the bottom\, m
 ove into a treading or floating position for at least 15 seconds\, swim on
  front and/or back for 5 body lengths\, then exit the water. ? Move into a
  back float for 15 seconds\, roll to the front then recover to a vertical 
 position. ? Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front 
 for 5 body lengths\, roll to back\, float for 15 seconds\, roll to the fro
 nt\, then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. Level 4 - Stroke Improveme
 nt Ages: 6 years and up Description: The purpose of this level is to impro
 ve participants' proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were 
 introduced in Level 3. Learning Objectives: ? Headfirst entries from the s
 ide in compact and stride positions ? Swim under water ? Feet first surfac
 e dive ? Survival swimming ? Front crawl and backstroke open turns ? Tread
  water using 2 different kicks ? Swim front crawl and elementary backstrok
 e for 25 yards ? Swim butterfly\, back crawl\, and sidestroke for 15 yards
  ? Flutter and dolphin kicks on back ? Learn water safety skills Participa
 nts are ready for this level if they have completed the American Red Cross
  Learn-to-Swim Level 3 OR can successfully complete all certification requ
 irements from Level 3 including: ? Jump into deep water from the side\, re
 cover to the surface\, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 min
 ute\, rotate one full turn then turn as necessary to orient to the exit po
 int\, level off\, swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yar
 ds\, then exit the water. ? Push off in a streamlined position then swim f
 ront crawl for 15 yards\, change position and direction as necessary\, swi
 m elementary backstroke for 15 yards\, then exit the water. Level 5 - Stro
 ke Refinement Ages: 6 years and up Description: The purpose of this level 
 is to further learn how to coordinate and refine strokes. Learning Objecti
 ves: ? Shallow-angle dives into deep water ? Tuck and pike surface dives ?
  Flip turns ? Tread water for 5 minutes ? Sculling for 30 seconds ? Swim f
 ront crawl\, breaststroke and elementary backstroke for 50 yards ? Swim bu
 tterfly\, back crawl\, and side stroke for 25 yards ? Learn water safety s
 kills Participants are ready for this level if they have completed the Ame
 rican Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 OR can successfully complete all cer
 tification requirements from Level 4 including: ? Perform a feetfirst entr
 y into deep water\, swim front crawl for 25 yards\, change direction and p
 osition as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. ? Swim b
 reaststroke for 25 yards\, change direction and position as necessary and 
 swim back crawl for 15 yards. ? Submerge and swim a distance of 3-5 body l
 engths underwater without hyperventilation\, return to the surface then ex
 it the water. Space will be provided for personal items on the pool deck. 
 Goggles are highly recommended. Showering is required before entering the 
 water. Class size is limited.
